I’m Matt, and I’m one of the older variety of web users/designers.
Thinking back to the early days of the internet, I remember using 8-bit animated GIFs, creating layouts with tables, and even working with Photoshop before it had layers — those were the hardcore days, which might give you an idea of how long I’ve been around!

Web design has thankfully evolved over the years, but I sometimes find myself reminiscing about the challenges we faced to put a web page together. I remember my first job in the real world, being asked to use Microsoft FrontPage and thinking, “What is this?” I was once asked to design a website for a company, and they assumed I’d also write the content and come up with new product ideas for them—no joke!

Not everything we did back then was bad. Sure, some things were naive or experimental, and we probably got more wrong than right. But I actually enjoyed the constraints, like optimising graphics to within an inch of their life due to low bandwidth. There were some ingenious solutions that arose from those limitations.

On this trip down memory lane, I remembered the scrolling marquee—a little message that scrolled across the top of your web page. It moved! Amazing, right? I recall FrontPage even had it built in as a feature, which might explain why it was overused.

But was it really so bad? In some cases, I thought it was genuinely useful. Am I right? Rather than dismiss it just because it’s old or went out of fashion, I thought I’d give it another shot and ask what you all think.

So, I asked Hosting UK if they’d indulge me by letting me ask you — what do you think about scrolling marquees? Love them, hate them, or something in between? Let me know in the poll below!
